چکیده

At the Advanced Photon Source (APS) at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), a free-electron laser (FEL) based on the self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) process is nearing completion. Recently, an rf photoinjector gun system was made available to the APS by Brookhaven National Laboratory/Accelerator Test Facility (BNL/ATF). It will be used to provide the highbrightness, low-emittance, and low-energy spread electron beam required by the SASE FEL theory. A Nd:Glass laser system, capable of producing a maximum of 500 μJ of UV in a 1-10 ps pulse at up to a 10-Hz repetition rate, serves as the photoinjector’s drive laser. Here, the design, commissioning, and integration of this gun with the APS will be discussed.

Beam Dynamics Enhancement due to Accelerating Field Symmetrization in the BNL/SLAC/UCLA 1.6 cell S-Band Photocathode RF Gun

A 1.6 cell photocathode S-Band gun developed by the BNL/SLAC/UCLA collaboration is now in operation at the Brookhaven Accelerator Test Facility (ATF). One of the main features of this RF gun is the symmetrization of the RF coupling iris with a identical vacuum pumping port located in the full cell. The effects of the asymmetry caused by the RF coupling iris were experimentally investigated by p...

Emittance Measurements of the Advanced Photon Source Photocathode Rf Gun*

The Advanced Photon Source (APS) photocathode rf gun is the primary beam source for the APS Low-Energy Undulator Test Line (LEUTL) free-electron laser (FEL) experiment. In the current operating regime of LEUTL, peak current has been the dominant factor in determining FEL performance. As LEUTL’s operational wavelength is reduced, however, the beam emittance will play an increasingly important ro...

Optimal Parameters of the Photocathode Gun Space Charge to Improve Beam Quality

Accelerator Test Facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL ATF) operates with 5 MeV photocathode gun and 70 MeV linac for different range of experiments with a few picoseconds and a few micrometers emittance electron bunch. Many conducted experiments require beam with good spatial resolution and short length as well. NdYaG laser pulse turns to the electron bunch in the gun with space char...

rookhaven photocathode rf gun

The Brookhaven Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) uses a photocathode rf gun to provide a high-brightness electron beam intended for FEL and laser acceleration experiments. The rf gun consists of 1-,' cells driven at 2856 MHz in 7r-mode with a maximum cathode field of 100 MV/m. To achieve long lifetimes, our photocathode development concentrates on robust metals such as copper, yttrium and samariu...
